Ripening & Harvesting

The harvesting of the grapes can begin during the third growing season.  In August some of the foliage from the fruiting canes should be removed to allow more sunlight to reach the fruit.  Do not remove too much though because some shade is good to have.

The colour, sweetness and texture of the grapes are the main factors in determining when the fruit is ready to harvest.   As proper ripeness approaches, the grapes will increase in sweetness so frequent tasting is important.  The grapes will also deepen in colour and acquire a soft texture.

Valiant grapes will ripen first in late July or August.  The Niagara and Fredonia grapes will ripen in about the middle of October.

To harvest the grape bunch, simply clip the leader at the top of the bunch.
