Alex's Story

Alex Mageau has lived in Haileybury Ontario for 65 years and had a long and successful career with Ontario Hydro.  Alex had a large kitchen garden next to the house for many years where he grew various vegetables and was always willing to experiment with unusual plants such as watermelons,  various peppers,  and even grafted 10 different varieties of apples onto an apple tree.  In 2005, Alex changed direction and completely rebuilt his garden with the intent of attempting to grow grapes in this rather extreme climate.  Over many years Alex has acquired expertise in growing techniques for this area where approximately 3 feet of snow covers the vines in the winter and summer temperatures can be above 30C.

Alex is now in his 90's and still enthusiastically works his vineyard and produces an abundant  harvest each year with 3 varieties of eating grapes.  His great-grandchildren love to come and "help" with the harvest  He hopes that you will find this website informative and help you find the joy in growing grapes.
